| Java Jam II |
| Casey Kochmer |
| I just got back from Java Jam II. If you only have the time to go to one conference then this is the one! It was awesome. Not only was it great talking with all the authors, but the topics were excellent, the people fun, and the cruise was just a awesome way to hold a conference. Cost wise it was actually less expensive than going to a traditional conference since the room and food were part of the conference costs. Also since most of attendees got together off hours to have fun, this meant this conference had a more personal feel about it over a traditional conference. It was both an extremely professional conference and fun. Java Jam III is all set to go in early September to Alaska. |
| Quite simply this was the best conference I ever had the pleasure to
attend. It was a solid week of both learning Java and just having
a total blast with members of the Java community. It's a conference
that will always be one my calendar to attend! |
| JavaJam |
| My presentations for the conference are online at the site. |

| Wrox has donated some sample chapters from Beginning Java Networking. For details on the book and access to the sample chapters click here. |
| Migration to XHTML |
| Kevin Sharp | Novemeber 2001 |
| I am always examining and trying to forecast the turn over of various technologies. The one technology which has been giving me the most trouble is XHTML. XHTML always seems to be just a year away. This article has some interesting insights to XHTML from a mobile phone point of view. It is especially interesting since XHTML-capable handsets will begin shipping in second half of 2002. The article goes on to predict in 2003 WML-equipped browsers to equal match the XHTML population. Sounds like XHTML is still a year away, but it actually might be a year away this time. |
| JSP Survey |
| TheJSPBook.com has a survey up to see how people use JSP. Participate yourself and see how others are using JSP. |
| Using XSL-FO to Create Printable Documents |
| Rodolfo M. Raya | November 2001 |
| As a JSP programmer one of the requests most received to control the output of the HTML page. The formatting is especially difficult when trying to achieve decent printing results. XSL-FO is here to help. This article introduces XSL-FO (XML Stylesheet Language-Formatting Objects) and explains how it can be used in your project. To demonstrate the advantage of using XSL-FO, the article includes an example implementation of a database reporting system that uses Java and XML code. |
| Selling in Tongues |
| Who is your audience? This is a interesting article which examines some of the demographics of the web. In a quick summary, make sure your web application is written for the target audiences language. |

| Coldtags Suite |
| ColdBeans Software has had another big release of the ColdTags suite. They say it is 'Probably the largest collection of custom JSP tags', and I'd tend to agree. However, the Jakarta-Taglibs is pretty dang big too! The ColdBeans tags are free to use, but without source-code. They do all sorts of odd things, check them out. |
| Net Beans 3.3 Beta 5 Released |
| The latest version of NetBeans has been released. The Netbeans folks plan on releasing a new beta once a week till the final release of NetBeans occurs. From a JSP point of view all the Forte 3.0 JSP features have been rolled into this version of NetBeans. Also XML editing has been added. The current Beta blows up on my machine so, I haven't tested it yet, but I figure in the next few weeks I will make the switch. The Forte 3.0 JSP features are a nice addition and I do miss them in NetBeans 3.2. The final release is scheduled for Dec 12th 2001. |
| dom4j Version 1.1 |
| dom4j is factory based Java representation for handling XML file. It works well and is worth checking into if you need to work with XML in your Java programs. |
| Mozilla 0.9.6 Release |
| Mozilla chugs on with the 0.9.6 release. You can download the latest version here. Cheers for the Mozilla crew! As a side note. The recent Netscape 6.2 release was built upon the Mozilla 0.9.4.1 source release. |
| Eclipse |
| eclipse.org | November 7th, 2001 |
| An open source generic IDE. I haven't played with this tool yet. The idea is neat, This is a generic IDE, or an open extensible IDE for anything but nothing in particular. |
| Expresso Framework 4.0 |
| Jcorporate released open source Expresso Framework 4.0, a Java application development framework which is now integrated with the Apache Jakarta Struts Framework. This integration is important leap for Java developers utilizing either framework solution. |
| XML Java API's |
| A place to download all of the JAX XML API's from Sun. Very kewl. |
