THE LATEST NEWS
================================================================
1) Opera Finds Footing in Browser War (CNet 05.15.2001)
Lots of good news for Opera. They just signed a deal with IBM contract to
use Opera in the NetVista Internet Appliance and another device not yet
disclosed. The article goes on to mention that downloads of Opera have
been at a consistently high volume as of late. From our own site stats, it
is clear Opera is on the rise. It will be interesting to see if there is
enough room in the market for three browsers or if Netscape is going to
get squeezed out of the market. It is too early to tell, but it looks like
Opera will be a survivor, and Netscape will only be around if AOL gets
serious about supporting and improving Netscape.
2) Weblogic JSP Security Bugs (JavaLobby 5.16.2001)
WebLogic has a bug which permits people to view JSP code on the server from a
client browser. This news link is also interesting from the general
discussion within the thread.

************************** Web Hosting *************************
Well JSPInsider is a year old now! Its been a great year. So great that we
have outgrown our simple HTML based server account and need to move to a
dedicated server. We have started to work closely with HostJsp.com
and we will be moving the site over the next few
weeks to HostJsp.com. The initial move will just be the HTML based site.
However, once on the server we will start to upgrade the JSPInsider to be
JSP/XML driven. This is both fun and good news since we will be able to
share our experiences with everyone. We will actually be experimenting
with many new configurations and will be able to give new services from
the site. As an example we will spread out our various sites to work with
different JSP containers and be able to show real time differences between
the various JSP containers on the site.
The JSPInsider crew would like to extend a special thanks to HostJsp.com.
They have been truly a great set of people to work with and if you are
looking for a JSP Hosting solution stop by their site to say hi.
************************* Long Live XML *************************
The other piece of big news for the JSPBuzz is starting in our next issue
it will be a XML based newsletter. This Buzz will be a bit shorter as a
result. The best news about this is that I will write up a tutorial based
on my experiences of transforming the Buzz and share everything I learn
including any code and XSLT the process will use. It should be a fun
experience.
It is nice as the reason behind JSPInsider was to create a site to help
share our experiences with others in using JSP. These two moves will help
tremendously in achieving this goal. Also if you or someone else you know
is interested in writing up their JSP experiences let us know, we are
interested in providing a place to post such articles.

[Java Site] Java Skyline
I like the Java Skyline. It is a good site with a eye towards news. In
fact, I consider it to be one of the best Java sites for keeping up to
date on current events. The site will be reorganizing itself soon and so
it will be worth checking back in the future to see how the site changes.
[Search Engines] grub.org
This site is home to an open source, distributed internet crawler.
Grub.org is building a distributed network to maintain a real-time and
extremely comprehensive index of the entire Internet. The size of the
grub.org database will exceed the size of any other index on the Internet
today, and, at the same time, will be the most up-to-date. They compare
themselves to the Seti at home project but they are searching for web
sites rather than aliens. Neat idea.
[Article] Considering Personalization for Your Site
(James Mendelsohn 5.16.2001)
A high level review on how to use personalization to dynamically customize
a web site. The article is very "fluffy", (I am using "fluffy" in the
technical sense), but it gets one started thinking about the initial issues
a programmer will face with personalization.
[Article] Writing Servlet 2.3 Filters (Stephanie Fesler 05.10.2001)
An introduction on how to use the new filter feature which is in the
latest Servlet 2.3 specifications.
[Fun Site] The Public 8 Ball
This is a great site, powered by legos and the internet, everyone
now has access to the power of the eight ball. It is even better
than some of the tech support that can be found around the internet.
[Commentary] Soapbox: Magic Bullet or Dud? (Brett McLaughlin 4.2001)
Brett takes a closer look at SOAP and give his opinion on the state
of SOAP. It is worth reading if you are starting to think about
building interapplication based systems.
[Article] Simplify XML programming with JDOM
(Wes Biggs & Harry Evans 5.2001)
This article is an introduction to JDOM.
[Article] J2ME Grows Up (Todd Sundsted 05.2001)
When J2ME was introduced it was very exciting, however, it quickly
became clear it would be a little while before it would be time
to use J2ME. The article gives an introduction to the current state
of affairs of J2ME. The conclusion? J2ME still shows promise, but
we still are not near prime time yet for this product.
[Conference] Web Developers Conference 2001, June 12 - 15, 2001, Denver.
This general Web application development conference is a great chance to
see other server-side technologies at work and learn more about JSP. I
will be there to give several presentations on JSP, XML and Tag libraries.
From personal experience I highly recommend WebDev Con, it is both a great
and fun conference to attend.

[JSP Container] Tomcat Releases 3.3 m3 and 4.0 b5 (5.18.2001)
The latest releases of Tomcat have been released this week.
The nice thing about Tomcat is that the updates have been frequent
and solid improvements.
[Java IDE] Borland JBuilder 5 Released (5.15.2001)
The latest version of JBuilder was just released. It has better XML and
XSL support. This release also includes integration to several major
J2EE servers.
