Yet another solid book from Wrox. Professional Java XML programming with Servlets and JSP covers exactly what it says in the title. Starting with the Java Servlet API and an explanation of three-tier applications, this book establishes all of the basics before diving into XML and JSP. This book will be very beneficial to any Java developer making the transition into three-tier applications and JSP. For developers already experienced with JDBC three-tier applications but would like to extend their knowledge to include XML, this book is perfect.
What about the XML? Java XML starts from the ground up yet again. Plugging through this part may be rough, but soon after the book dives full fledge into XML based applications. Because this book covers so much it may seem like eons before you finally reach the XML section, but the payoff will be well worth the wait. By the time the last page is turned, XML will be fit nicely under your belt and you will be well upon your way with JSP and XSLT.
One could easily complain that this book could use some resizing. However, by the end of the book you'll be happy all the filler is there and for a good reason. Its not filler! In order to use XML efficiently and effectively a Java developer needs to know alot. Java XML makes sure to cover each of the bases.
What did I like about Java XML?
What didn't I like about Java XML?
Would I recommend it?
Overall yes, however the degree which I would recommend it will vary greatly from developer to developer. If you are looking to beef up your JDBC, JSP, JavaMail and SAX knowledge this book will fit nicely into your collection. On the other hand, there are many XML tools and parsers available besides Sun's. Large chunks of this book won't apply to you if you aren't fond of Sun's extension API's.
Final notes
Java XML covers alot and does a good job doing it. Plenty of source code is included and explained in the text. If you read this book cover to cover, you will be well upon your way to building some powerful Java/XML applications.
