The Java Language Specification, Second Edition is just that. This book is nothing more than the current Java 2 specification (i.e. Java 1.2+) in print. You can read this material for free on you computer, it comes with Sun's standard Java development kit download, but I would encourage every serious Java developer to have a hard copy handy. Out of all the books on my shelf, this is one of the few I constantly pick up to look up some little Java fact...oddly enough, usually when helping others work with Java.
In short: this is the Java specification. If you work a lot with Java, this is the spec to have a hard copy of.
As for miscellaneous book issues, everything is well done. The book looks great, the book is made of high quality materials, and the book has an excellent index.
